He received a special prize at the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International competition in 1960 and in 1962 he was a prizewinner at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, making his New York and London debuts the following year. In addition to recital work, he has performed as soloist with many other orchestras in the US and abroad.

Opening Night

Pops Concert: Gershwin and Friends

Saturday, September 27, 2008

8pm

Highlights from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess featuring soprano NaGuanda Nobles and tenor Trente Morant. The evening includes songs and orchestral selections from the early golden age of Broadway – the 1920s and 30s and the memorable artists whose music lit up the Broadway stage.

NaGuanda Nobles was named 2008 Shreveport Opera’s Singer of the Year and won the first annual Irene Dalis Vocal Competition in June 2007, produced by Opera San José. Ms. Nobles played Mimi in Fremont Opera’s 2007 production of La Bohème.

Trente Morant is an active performer as well as conductor, arranger and accompanist. A resident of the Bay Area for more than 20 years, Mr. Morant is a three-time winner of “Artist in Residence” from the California Arts Council. • Cellist Travis Chen, 12, who has won numerous competitions and performed as soloist with the Fremont Symphony at the 2008 Children’s Concerts, will perform the first movement of Lalo’s Cello Concerto.
  • Pianist Alex Chien, 10, who won the Nafisa Taghioff Award in the Fremont Symphony’s 2008 Young Artist Competition, the grand prize in the 2009 Mondavi Young Artist Competition and both First Place and the “Most Promising Young Talent” special award in the Ninth International Russian Piano Competition, Young Musician category, will perform works by Liszt, Chopin and Wang.
  • Violinist Stephen Kim, 13, was a featured soloist on NPR’s “From the Top” and recently debuted at Davies Symphony Hall with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, winning a rave review from Heuwell Tircuit of San Francisco Classical Voice for his “remarkable level of power, spot-on intonation and maturity of phrasing.” Stephen will perform the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.
