Currently in its 47th season, the fully professional Fremont Symphony Orchestra continues to provide high quality musical performances, youth education and cultural outreach programs in Fremont and neighboring communities such as Newark, Milpitas, Union City and Hayward. The Symphony also draws audiences from the regions of northern Alameda County and central Contra Costa and as far west as Palo Alto and the Peninsula. The Fremont Symphony Orchestra is a publicly held 501(c)(3) non profit organization.
Founded in 1964 as the Fremont Philharmonic Society, the orchestra was first comprised of both professional and community musicians. In 1980 the orchestra became a fully professional ensemble known as the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra’s recent renown is owed in large part to the continuity of musical leadership with 30 consecutive seasons under the baton of David Sloss, who is also the founding Artistic Director of Fremont Opera.
The Board of Directors has also demonstrated exceptional stewardship by leading the organization through the worst economic downturn of the region. The Symphony takes pride in the fairness and integrity with which it treats its musicians, offering competitive wages and according individual attention so that every musician may achieve the highest possible standard of artistic excellence. For over 25 years, the Fremont Symphony has maintained the highest musician retention rate of any orchestra in the Bay Area. Similarly, the organization’s subscriber base remains constant with a renewal rate of 99% and 1% in new subscriptions each season.
The Fremont Symphony has developed a highly skilled corps of volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds, who collaborate with the Board and staff to organize the majority of the Symphony’s performances and special events. The Symphony has three main areas of activity: 1) a subscription concert series featuring the symphony orchestra, and 2) a holiday Nutcracker ballet and 3) various educational activities to develop future audiences for the performing arts.
